Ringling Students Suffer Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Posted on Jan 12, 2010

Six Ringling College of Art and Design students are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and presently recovering at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  Ringling owns the campus housing where these students reside, and it is the only campus housing facility that has gas heat.  The property is not equipped with a carbon monoxide detector.

Ringling officials state that because a carbon monoxide detector is not legally required, it did not occur to anyone to install the detector.  Ringling has begun taking out all gas applicances from the house so they can be replaced with electric devices.

Sarasota County’s fire captain requests that anyone using a gas heater install a carbon monoxide detector in their home.
